The Milestones of the Center for Galaxy Evolution Research

1915

Dr. Rufus, an astronomer, opened and taught astronomy courses upon the founding of Yonhi College.

1926

Professor Won-Chul Lee, Korea’s first Doctor of Science, returned after earning a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Michigan and began astronomy research and education.

1997

The predecessor of CGER, the Ultraviolet Space Telescope Research Group, was ranked first in the Creative Research Initiative Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology and was established as a Yonsei University research institute.

1999

First publication in Nature by the Korean astronomy community.

2002

First publication in Science by the Korean astronomy community.

2003

Joint launch with NASA of the GALEX Galaxy Evolution Explorer space telescope.

2005

Selected for the Yonsei Global 5-5-10 Strategic Development Program.

2006

Publications in both Nature and Science / Selected as an operational partner of the 4m telescope at CTIO (Chile) of the U.S. National Optical Astronomy Observatory.

2009

Publication in Nature.

2010

Signed an operational agreement for the 2.5m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory (Carnegie Observatories, Chile) / Selected as a Leading Research Center by the Ministry of Education.

2013

Signed operational agreements for mid-to-large telescopes with the University of Arizona (USA) and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute.

2014

Ranked first in the midterm evaluation of the Leading Research Center Program.

2015

Proposed a new theory for the formation origin of the Galactic bulge.

2017

Selected for an additional three-year support period in the final evaluation of the Leading Research Center Program.

2018

First in the international community to identify the origin of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters.

2020

Discovered a critical error in the Nobel Prize-winning accelerated expansion paradigm.

2022

Selected for the University-Focused Research Institute Program funded by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
